I work full-time aside from blogging at a research lab. The guy who sits at the desk next to mine really enjoys shopping at a Mexican Market here in town, and he regularly brings me some different foods to try. They are usually different kinds of Mexican candies, and he likes to see if I enjoy them or not (remember how I’m a picky eater?). One time, my co-worker brought me this candy, and I think it was supposed to be strawberry flavored. But, I couldn’t really tell because it was so sour…and spicy! It was so weird. It was like having a chili pepper, a war head (anyone else remember those?), and a strawberry in your mouth at the same time! Let’s just say I made some pretty funny faces while I was eating that.
Anyway…
This last week, my co-worker brought me another candy from the Mexican Market. I skeptically took a bite, and it was SO good! I savored every bit of it that I had! I looked at the ingredients and thought that it would be easy enough to recreate, so I did. This recipe tastes practically identical to what I tasted from the market, and I could eat them all day long , they’re THAT good.
I looked up the candy online – “Mazapan”. It’s the same as Marzipan. Marzipan is traditionally made with almonds, but this candy was made using peanuts, which I actually think tastes better. I like almonds better than peanuts, but peanut candy seems to taste better to me for some reason… Also, marzipan is not traditionally covered with chocolate, so that is another thing that makes this recipe unique (who doesn’t like chocolate!?). So…peanuts + chocolate = almost like a Reese’s! (my husband thinks it tastes just like a Reese’s!)
This candy can be made with or without the chocolate coating! It tastes great both ways! Here’s what they look like plain:
Chocolate Covered Peanut Marzipan
Ingredients:
1 cup plain roasted unsalted peanuts, skins removed (not raw)
3/4 cup powdered sugar
2 Tbs. sweetened condensed milk (divided)
1 cup milk chocolate chips
dash salt (optional)
Directions:
1. In a food processor, grind the peanuts until finely ground (about 30 seconds)
2. Add 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk, a dash of salt, and the powdered sugar. Continue to process for 4-5 minutes. (Scrape off sides as needed. Careful to not overwork your food processor!)
3. Add another tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk. After 4-5 minutes, the peanut oils will begin to release and cause the mixture to clump together.
4. Roll out the mixture into compact balls or small disks.
5. If dipping in chocolate, place in the freezer to harden for at least 1 hour. If leaving plain, proceed to step #9.
6. Melt chocolate by placing in microwave at 50% power and stirring every 30 seconds until melted.
7. Removed candies from freezer and dip them in the chocolate (use a fork or spoon to aid you in this procedure).
8. Allow chocolate to set.
9. Enjoy! To store candies for long periods of time, keep them in the refrigerator.

Sharon and Denise!
In Europe you can get so many marzipan candies covered in chocolate. There is one chocolate (actually marzipan paste covered in chocolate, that I used to eat all the time.
Anyway, I never heard of this “peanuts marzipan”. It sounds delicious!!!
Oh, really!? That’s fun to know! I’ve never been to Europe before. I’ve really only had international candies that friends give to me or that I get at international stores. I hope that I can go there one day (soon!).
Gosh… I don’t remember the name of the brand now, but you can get that chocolate in Whole Foods. IT’S DELICIOUS!!!
Yet another WOW from me Lory for a ‘yummilicious’ treat. All the ingredients are available here (unlike the pretzels as I mentioned on that post), so I have no excuse not to prepare it. Very simple too. Your recipes are great! I am bookmarking all your vegan recipes for my reference whenever I need them. Thanks very much. Cheers
Thanks Rema! I may possibly have a lot more vegan options than an average blogger because my husband can’t have red meat, so that eliminates a lot of meat options right there. Also, everyone in my family (including myself) is lactose intolerant! We normally just have lactaid pills, but sometimes they get annoying so I just don’t bother even cooking with dairy products. I hope you stop by a lot to check out my recipes!! Have a good weekend.
Oh, more vegan recipes from you would mean more comments from me Lori!!! My son had lactose intolerance when he was a little boy but it got cured by homeopathy medicines (alternative) within a year and a half. I can understand how awful it can be. Stay well dear!
Cheers,
Rema

How interesting! I’ve had good marzipan and I’ve had bad marzipan, but always from almonds. I’ve never had peanut marzipan. Cool!
I’ve only had almond marzipan a couple times and have never liked it..maybe it was a bad marzipan! I just like the peanut kind a lot more! Maybe I’ll keep my options open for a good almond kind still, because I love almonds! Thanks for stopping by!!
